Sanchez, Luttrell and Suarez Named to RMAC Academic Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three Western New Mexico University basketball student-athletes were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll as announced by the conference office Tuesday.


On the women's side, senior Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ/St. Mary's High School), who holds a 3.56 GPA and is majoring in general studies. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native has played in all 15 games this season, starting two. She averages close two 20 minutes (19.7) per game, while tallying 4.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, .8 assists per game, along with nine steals.
Chadron State's Kaitlin Petri was named the Academic Player of the Year on the women's side.


Juniors Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) and Juan Suarez (Nogales, AZ/Nogales High School) represented the men's squad on the list. Luttrell, from Las Cruces, is majoring in accounting and currently holds a 3.48 GPA. He has started all 16 games this season and is the third-leading scorer on the team averaging 9.4 a contest. In addition, he averages nearly 32 minutes (31.8) on the court, shoots over 47 percent (47.3), while bringing in 3.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 13 steals and 10 blocks. Suarez , from Nogalez, Ariz., is also majoring in accounting and holds a 3.44 GPA. Like Luttrell, he has seen action in all 16 games, starting 10 and is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.5 per game. He leads the team in assists, dishing out 3.6 per game, while connecting on just over 40 percent (40.2) from the field. He also collects 2.4 rebounds and 17 steals so far this season.


Metro State's Jonathan Morse was named the Academic Player of the Year on the men's side.


WNMU will return to action this week with just one contest as they will host New Mexico Highlands this Saturday with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. for the women's game, followed by the men's at 7:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
